Our vision
It’s Up To Us is a new initiative born of an epiphany in a four-hour traffic jam, a sudden clear realization that in the climate crisis no-one else is going to come to the rescue. It’s Up To Us.
On our current course, resource breakdown is inevitable. What cannot continue will not continue. Fundamental change is therefore inevitable, but we have to steer it purposefully to avoid chaos. We believe it is within our power to do so.
It’s up to us proposes a new approach. Firstly, we ask the older generation to donate its knowledge and experience to young entrepreneurs who are rising to the climate challenge, in order to accelerate the impact of their projects.
Secondly, using the power of the Pareto effect, we work to identify those twenty percent of human activities where focused action will achieve eighty per cent of the climate impact we need to survive and flourish.
Based on this analysis, young and old together are creating and implementing a transformation plan to buy fifty years free of fossil-fuel consumption using existing technologies and know-how. We will buy a literal breathing space that sets us firmly on the path to the future our civilization needs.
It is a plan that people can understand and participate in as consumers, change-makers and leaders. Along with the challenges, good news on progress will be shared, with young people top of mind.
It’s up to us will focus all the talents into a global purpose-driven community of retirees; climate entrepreneurs; technologists; poets; scientists; teachers; economists; artists; children; visionary funders; industrialists; politicians; spiritual leaders; lawyers; wise old folks; idealistic teenagers; and hard-headed project managers.
It brings hope for the young, purpose for the golden-agers, and progress for the planet.
The ultimate objective is to evolve a new kind of society, re-generating and nurturing the natural world and our personal liberties whilst moving into a post-consumerist era, using the gift of lost wisdoms and modern technologies for the good of all.
Our vision is of our descendants living under a friendly sun, in a less-crowded world of peace and relative leisure, freed from the burden of acquiring stuff for stuff’s sake. A blend of new and proven technologies is used to generate wealth without pollution and keep them healthy and free.
They have enough faith in the future to have children of their own. The abundant sustainable wealth of the Earth is shared harmoniously, and they are fulfilled by a life with a more rounded sense of purpose than those of us who ground our way through a gluttonous, materialistic and self-defeating age.
We hope they will be proud of us. It will have meant that we truly realized it was “up to us” and found a way to leave them a better legacy.
